Young Canadian Lutherans (YCLs) from across Canada (NB, ON, BC) will open the gathering with Acknowledgement of Territory, Session Introductions and Prayer.
Sessions will be led by Rev. Karen Kuhnert (ON), Rev. Erik Parker (MN), Rev. Dr. Peter Kuhnert (ON) and book author Rev. Dr. Gordon Jensen (SK).
Each week, session participants will dig deeper into Jensen's discovery of Luther's highlighted words and phrases in the 1534 Bible, a bible that Luther and colleagues created in Wittenberg.
The highlights Jensen discovered show Luther's emphasis on pointing to Christ who wants people to Experience Gospel.
Persons eager to know what Scripture passages Luther most wanted to emphasize during the Protestant Reformation should mark their calendars and join in for this opportunity at Experiencing Gospel.
Please reach out to us at CanadianLutheranHistory@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.
Some congregations are using these Cross-Canada sessions as an October-November Bible Study for their congregation. They will attend the national session and then discuss the study session locally in their congregation. As such, the text Experiencing Gospel is available for bulk purchase from 1517 Media (Fortress Press, Augsburg Fortress). Single copies are available from the link above, from book delivery services with overnight shipping, and from your neighbourhood book seller. Look for hard copy versions or the Kindle digital book.
We are eager to invigorate the people of the ELCIC in this time of considerable transition. This Cross-Canada Bible Study is an opportunity to meet, greet and grow with Lutherans from coast to coast to coast.
Yes, the Bible Study sessions will be recorded so intergenerational participants can engage at a time convenient for them. What's missing for those who participate outside of the live session times is the opportunity to immediately ask questions and get answers, provide live feedback to the session leaders and to contribute to the collective experience of studying and discerning as a community studying Scripture together.
Yes! Gordon Jensen is Emeritus William Hordern Professor at Lutheran Theological Seminary, Saskatoon and a professional Historical Theologian specializing in the history and theology of the Reformation. Experiencing Gospel is an easy read -and a very interesting read! It is particularly written for a wide audience of learners. The ideas in Experiencing Gospel transfer easily to Sunday Service, Adult Bible Study Groups, Confirmation class teaching and preaching.
3 PM allows for participation in every time-zone of the ELCIC. Tuesdays were chosen as Tuesdays are the most common days for congregational leaders to be busy with Sunday planning and so congregants have the least number of options for activities of meaning-making. This online Bible Study is being conducted by well-known and respected Canadian Lutheran leaders.
Don't miss out on reading the "Endorsements" at the bottom of the promo page for Experiencing Gospel by Fortress Press. This Lutheran Quarterly Publication has received highest honours from leading academics and church leaders across North America.
