Series 4 - Lutheran Free Church (1917-1962)

1917-1962 (Creation)

25 cm of textual records

Lutheran Free Church - Canada District

Finding its roots in Norway's Revival Movement, the Lutheran Free Church began its work in Canada in 1895.

Spearheaded by Reverend Christian Sangstad and eighty Norwegians from Minnesota, the Augsburg congregation was established in Bella Coola, British Columbia.

From British Columbia, the Lutheran Free Church spread to the prairie provinces at the beginning of the twentieth century. The Lutheran Free Church merged with the American Lutheran Church in 1963, which would eventually lead to the formation of the autonomous Evangelical Lutheran Church of Canada in 1967.

The series contains source material on the Canada District of the Lutheran Free Church from 1917 to 1962. It consists of correspondence, constitutions and bylaws, minutes, reports, handbooks and presented papers, documenting the activities of the Canada District of the Lutheran Free Church.

About the ELCC & ELCIC

Additional Information

The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Canada (1967-1985) was the first autonomous Lutheran Church in Canada. ELCC was originally organized as the Canada District of the newly formed The American Lutheran Church in 1960. After receiving a charter from the Parliament of Canada, ELCC began operating as an independent church body on January 1, 1967. In 1985, ELCC merged with Canada District-Lutheran Church in America (LCA) to form the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada ( ELCIC).
